This week we have a slight change of pace and we’re looking a major environmental issue, that is, the quality of water in Dublin Bay.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Gerry Jones for many years and he’s well known as a successful Investor, Chairman and Director, over a wide range of Technology businesses.
But Gerry, through his personal interest and that of his family, and with a group of other concerned citizens, became involved in Citizen Activism after finding out about the poor quality of water in Dublin Bay.
The story is very interesting, about how the group discovered flaws in the monitoring of water quality in Dublin Bay and that there is still a large amount of sewage flowing into the Bay during times of heavy rainfall.
Gerry and the SOS Dublin Bay team are shining a spotlight on the problem and he updates us on what they have done, in terms of short terms fixes and also to help move the Political establishment and Authorities to focus on the issue.
This podcast shows how concerned citizens can help make a difference to everyone’s lives.

We’re delighted to have a legend in the Telecoms industry on the Podcast this week, with Joe Cunningham as our guest. Joe, along with Larry Quinn and Gilbert Little, co-founded a succession of successful Telecoms companies and sold them on.
The companies include, Aldiscon. Apion. Aepona, Accuris, and only sold last week, Ammeon.
The experience that people build when working in these companies led them, in turn, to go on and to found dozens of other companies, many of them still with us today.
Joe recounts how Aldiscon got into SMS in the very early days and how this was the start of a now $200 Billion Industry. Funnily, he tells how Aldiscon helped, what turned out to be its later biggest competitor, CMG, build an SMSC in the early days.
You can see in this fascinating story how the traits of great Entrepreneurship are exhibited, such as responding to failure with pivots, tenacity, patience and a focus on building great teams and delivering great products.
Finally Joe finishes off with his thoughts on where the future opportunities are and he plays out with a beautiful song. I know you’ll enjoy this podcast as much as we did recording it.

This week we meet Helga Vigfusdottir, Helga is a Social Entrepreneur based in Iceland, having been previously a Politician and Social Advocate there.
Helga talks about Women in Leadership and why Iceland leads the world in this area. She talks about the Services, Legal Framework and Culture change that has made Iceland Number One in this area.
Previously, having been elected to the Reykjavik City Council she advocated for better services for women and children in different areas including Mental Health.
From her experiences there Helga decided to found KaraConnect, which is a SaaS Platform to enable Therapists to deliver services online to clients with full confidentiality as well as meeting GDPR requirements.
She says: “During my time in politics & at the Department of Education in Iceland, I observed real difficulties in patients reaching therapy, due to geography, budgets and the high cost of therapists. This is why I started Kara – to enable any type of face to face therapy, both within clinics that want to scale, and within municipalities and companies. This not only allows patients to quickly and easily access the right kind of help they need but also increase the market that therapists can access.”Helga is a great advocate for what she does and is now expanding Kara from Iceland and into Ireland and eventually the UK.
Her story is very compelling and shows how Helga and her team are making a difference and breaking new ground in an innovative way.
Also, she plays out on a stunning piece of Icelandic music.

Lochlann Scott is an innovative Social Entrepreneur and Founder and CEO of HelpLink, a mental health charity.
Lochlann has a background in helping people with mental health problems and he founded HelpLink, mainly out of his own experiences in the West of Ireland.
One of the groups where he is helping people to address their own mental health problems is in the Irish Diaspora or Irish emigrants.
He also can help out Corporates with their EAP programs on an practical Pay-as-you-Go basis.
He has good advice on how to recognise if Covid is affecting your own relationships.
This is a little different for us but is very pertinent to Innovation in a different context and you will realise how he is helping to make things better for people.
What I found about Lochlann is that he is truly innovative in the delivery of services and in the client groups he is helps, I think you’ll agree when you hear his story.
